The film stars Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Amy Magidan, and Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe Jackson. Kevin Costner plays a Iowa farmer, Ray Kinsella, who hears "the voice" and decides to plow under his corn crop to build a baseball field, hoping that his father's baseball hero, Shoeless Joe Jackson, will be able to play the game of baseball again after being banned for life in 1920. Kinsella travels around the country, following "the voice," to complete his task.
Joe Jackson was one of baseball's all-time greatest players. It was said that Babe Ruth copied his swing and that his glove was "the place triples went to die." The nic-name "Shoeless Joe" was introduced while he was playing in a minor league game with a new pair of spikes. The new spikes began to bother his feet, so in the middle of the game he took off his shoes and placed the rest of the games in his socks. Unfortunately, Jackson's career was cut short by the Black Sox Scandal of 1919. The Chicago White Sox won the American League Pennant in 1919, and some of the players agreed to throw the Series in exchange for money. Shoeless Joe refused to throw the Series, but after the White Sox lost he accepted his portion of the money. Jackson and seven other of his teammates were suspended for life after the 1920 season in what is remember as the Black Sox Scandal.
